You can choose to have it backup only when it is connected to a WiFi network - once the photos are backed up, you can remove them from your device to free up storage.
Google Photos can auto-backup of your photos and videos to your Google account. If you have a Google Pixel smartphone, you get unlimited storage of photos in original quality. This does not count towards your limited Google account storage so you can do this if you’re on a free plan. Here’s the best part (since most of us use Google services anyway): if you choose high quality in settings, Google gives you unlimited storage for all your photos. Videos can be stored in 1080p resolution.
